Background: While education "specialists" fret over their perceived need for the "diversity sensitivity inherent in multicultural curricula" and providing racially-balanced-and-non-sexuality-biased hiring practices, the first several years of our children's educational experience is furnished predominantly by, however qualified, women.
Of the 246 full-time teachers found in five elementary schools, during the 1995-1996 school year, only 50 -- a mere 20% -- were men! So much for cultural diversity. According to Dr. Joyce Flynn, TVCSD Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services: Arrowhead had but 11%, Minnesauke 26%, Mount 24%, Nassakeag 25% and Setauket 15% male instructional staffings.
We get a lot of rationalizations for these disparities from administrators but no change in the disproportionate numbers.
