Time's Up! Let's Capitalize on the Foolishness of the Selfless

One of the grand arguments offered by those advocating ever more increases in educational spending is that fiscal conservatives are nought but miserly, anally retentive, children hating, selfish baffooons. Well, The Waking Bear© proposes we test the allegedly well intentioned and apparently unalterably altruistic resolve of the Three Village Selfless.

The average Three Village child-in-attendance (CIA) family of two-point-five children receives $31,250 in educational welfare. This $12,500 per student cost is borne predominently by domestic partners, singles and married couples having no children, and some number of seniors whose children long ago fled the nest or, at least, stopped attending school. This kindred and childless majority is reeling at the prospect of paying still higher taxes and has been telling us of their intentions to move from the area. The Waking Bear© applauds that notion.

Several news articles have addressed an anticipated population "explosion," the result of increased cultural diversity and the desire of many recent arrivees to have families of four and more children. These greater numbers will raise both the average family size and the average cost to educate them.

More than $56 million in locally collected real estate taxes andgreater $28 million in state aid - about half of the income taxes we sent to New York State, recently - will be paid by Three Village residents this year to support the school system. Can you grasp the significance of that...$84,000,000!!! And, more than 80% of that money is used to pay salaries that are 30% higher than they should be, to tenured teachers now receiving an average of $73,985 plus their health insurance, pension, and an additional 7.5% of their incomes from YOUR pockets to pay the employer's share of social security requirements.

All that and tenure too.

As the majority of district taxpayers leave and are replaced with families having children, the burden for all of this nonsense will fall, deservedly, upon those creating it. Perhaps then the Selfless will see merit in frugality, an end to tenure and outrageous seniority allowances.

There is, perhaps, a two year window of opportunity before things become truly absurd. So, consider the following factors:

1. The Feds have increased the capital gain deductible on home sales to a half million dollars.($500,000) per couple.
2. The state legislature has lowered the school tax burden by some 27%.
3. LIPA has lowered our electric bills.
4. Long term interest rates are heading down.
5. New homes are filling up the vast areas of woodland that once made Three Village something more than Queens, with good schools and a low crime rate. As the new homes are swept up, the pricing on all of Shangri-Lala's housing will rise.

Then, sell your home.

After all has been said and done, if you can't get the establishment to see the wisdom of lower costs, then we suggest that you drive them to a point where reduction can no longer be ignored. When the present per family cost of $31,250 starts rising towards $62,500; when the percentage of community residents with children in the schools reverses its present near 70 "childless"/ 30 "CIA"ratio and proceeds toward a near 100% saturation point; when those now thinking that $5000 per year for all their childrens' education is a bargain find themselves staring at the prospect of paying the full and, by then far greater than, $12,500 cost of each child's education...change should occur. If it doesn't, no one important will care, as only the Selfless will be paying. And, while they and their children get "educated," the intelligent will have already left.
