Change - That Wonderful Smell In The Air
The TVCSD year is going to prove unbelievable. "Shocks" are coming that few will comprehend and still fewer will like. The measures of false pride, shortsightedness and greed being as great as they are throughout the educational community, both on Long Island and across the nation, Americans will in the next decade begin to reap what we have sown. Locally, creative accounting methods and pretentious expressions of concern for free speech, community involvement and the financial interests of the entire community have had their day. Truth is at our collective door and with it a huge bullet is in need of biting. The staff of The Waking Bear looks forward to watching the unfolding of Act III - Hubris on Saysme Street.
Throughout the nation, more than ever before, the media is addressing educational issues in depth. They write of patronage systems and financial mismanagement. School districts are taken to task for failure to notify parents of drug, alcohol, sexual abuse and assault problems. While, quite ludicrously, six year olds are charged with sexual harassment and a school district's equivalent of drug possession for carrying Midol! Hardly a week passes without reading something about tenure, voucher systems and comparisons of parochial versus public school learning methods. Authors like Thomas Sowell, Thomas Toch and E.D. Hirsch, Jr. are every few months publishing some new and ALWAYS critical analysis of America's failure to properly and effectively educate its children.
There's change in the air and it smells good.
