Analysis of TVCSD documents, obtained under the Freedom of Information provisions of New York State law, show that our teachers are doing quite well for themselves, even without benefit of a new contract. Despite their rantings to the contrary, public demonstrations and denial of non-contractual obligations to the children of the Three Village School District, teachers with more than three years service have averaged nearly 5% in raises over that earned by themselves during the 95/96 school year. Even if the highest (161.38%)and lowest (0.00%) increases are removed from the tally, they still managed an average and admiral 4.31 % increase. This is because they continue to receive increases for seniority [breathing] as well as "In-service Education"[more accurately defined as Training] and graduate school education.

Those of you so supportive of a quick and "at any cost" solution to the contract negotiations, believing the teachers are under some sort of financial stress, should examine the following figures very closely.

Steps are indicative of the numbers of years the teacher has worked for the district. Level is a measure of a teacher's academic achievement status, measured from 1 through 9. Whether one teaches kindergarten or a high school senior class in nuclear physics; whether one's degree is in multiculturalism, medicine or philosophy; all get paid according to their number of years on the job and accumulated "credits or certifications." Most of which have nothing to do with what may be taught in a classroom.

You will note that a few individuals received no increase. These are teachers in their 26th through 29th or beyond their 30th years of district employment, during which time no seniority increases are provided. Some of these same people, however, may have received an increase for the completion of additional education or training, for courses as banal as wine tasting or wall climbing.
