Recommendations:

  • Salary credit should be provided only for those courses provided either as part of a regular graduate school curriculum leading toward a degree or where state mandated and not provided by either the District or BOCES.
  • That excessed teachers should be used to lecture teachers in a sort of train-the-trainer program.
  • NO salary credit be provided to teachers trained on District or BOCES property during school hours.

Business leaders have complained for years that public schools aren’t turning out graduates ready to take part in a skilled work force. Now, a new test suggests America’s schools aren’t turning out adults ready to take part in its democracy. Producing good citizens, after all, was the major point of requiring universal education in the first place. Yet the 1998 results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress in civics showed major gaps in American students’ knowledge of how the U.S. government works and even how it came to be.

Longevity (Step) Increment Comparisons - September 1996 versus September 1999
In 1997, the inept school board and their favorite contract negotiating law firm, in consort with Sheila Mac Fadyen, president of the local teachers union, managed to squeak through a deal giving teachers a staggering 346% raise in longevity increments to those with from 26 through 30 of service. Immediately afterwards, "senior" teachers, including Mac Fadyen's own husband, retired in droves.

Schools Seek Better Learning Through Direct Instruction and Rote Practices 

CHICAGO (AP) - At 10:10 a.m. on a hot summer day, teacher Marilynn Clark is racing against the clock. While third-graders in Chicago's 400 summer schools are due for a multiplication lesson, Clark's students are stuck on reading.

Should We Be Recertifying the "Certified?"

In early July, New York State's Education Commissioner took exception to the failure of many student teacher candidates to pass the State's "certification" standards. He threatened to remove the charters of colleges that consistently fail to produce qualified candidates.
